Home Football News Smalling inspires Audenshaw School to semi-final spot

It was an unforgettable day at Audenshaw School as they moved to within touching distance of a place at the PlayStation Schools’ Cup Festival and welcomed a Premier League winner to the school.

Manchester United and England star Chris Smalling paid the school a special visit, with the ESFA Under 13 PlayStation Schools’ Cup for ‘B’ Teams quarter final clash against South Hunsley School selected as the Tie of the Round.

The match certainly delivered on entertainment value as it went all the way to a nail-biting penalty shootout. Audenshaw School will certainly have felt aggrieved to have not won the game in both regulation and extra time with the team hitting the woodwork an incredible seven times.

The home team must have felt it wasn’t their day as they saw their two opening spot kicks saved, but they were to eventually prevail as a 3-1 shootout success sealed their place in the semi-finals.

Smalling himself played his part before kick off as he joined in a brief warm-up with the Audenshaw team as well as making an appearance in both sides’ pre-match team photo.

His Q&A with the pupils provided some interesting answers including revealing that a Manchester United teammate takes a shower right before getting changed to go out on the pitch – find out who soon with the Q&A write-up on the website!

The defender’s appearance provided an incredible buzz around the school as hundreds of pupils waited after school to catch a glimpse of the star and to cheer on their fellow pupils in the on-pitch action.

There were a number of fun activities laid on throughout the day by PlayStation and the ESFA with professional coaching sessions taking place on the school’s state-of-the-art 4G surface and the Sports Hall hosting the ever-popular PlayStation Match Day Hub. The Hub boasted numerous PlayStation 4 gaming experiences as a suitable reward for well-performing pupils at the school.

We would like to thank Chris Smalling for being an incredible ambassador for the PlayStation Schools’ Cup and a role model for the kids. A huge thanks also goes to Audenshaw School for being great hosts for this memorable occasion!
