Home Football News Pupils quiz Southampton striker

Premier League striker Rickie Lambert was greeted with a hero’s welcome when he visited Hounsdown School in Southampton. During the event over 20 pupils were rewarded with the chance to put Southampton’s star forward through a Q&A session.

Before you read a selection of the questions and answers below, can you guess which was Lambert’s favourite goal that he has ever scored?

What does it take to become a professional footballer?

You need to be dedicated and prepared to put in a lot of hard work, while following a very strict fitness and diet programme. Spending a lot of time away from the family is also something that can be hard. This is particularly tough during Christmas.

What was your favourite goal you have ever scored?

I think my header during my debut for England was my favourite so far and one that I will never forget.

When I was at school I always thought I’d like to maybe join the Army, Navy or Marines. However, my number one ambition was always to become a professional footballer.

If you didn’t play football what sport would you like to play?

I was always good at badminton, so probably that.

Who is the most difficult player you have had to play against?

It has to be the Manchester United captain, Nemanja Vidic.

When you are not playing football what do you do to relax?

I enjoy spending as much time as I can at home with my family. My boys are at the age now where we can enjoy a kick about in the garden. That is the perfect way to relax.

The nutmeg, when it’s done well!

Do you have a brand new pair of boots before every match?

No, I like to wear the same pair of boots for as long as possible, especially if I’m scoring goals.

Who do you think will win the Premier League?

Based on their performances so far this season, I think Arsenal.

On current form, who do you think will win the World Cup?

It is always hard to predict a winner, but Brazil looks pretty strong at the moment. With the team playing in front of such a passionate home crowd they will be very hard to beat.

On current form, who do you think will be the star player of the World Cup?

You would have to say Cristiano Ronaldo, but Argentina has great players in the form of Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero.

Thanks to the pupils of Hounsdown School for their questions.
