Liverpool school Cardinal Heenan is celebrating cup glory after clinching the ESFA PlayStation Under 15 Schools’ Cup for Boys with a thrilling 4-2 win over Kent school St Columba’s.

The final sprang into life at Hillsborough after just three minutes; Cardinal Heenan’s Kevin Cringle picked up the ball on the edge of the box and hit a ripping shot past the keeper to take an early lead. Cardinal Heenan kept up the pressure deep in the St Columba’s half and were rewarded when a cross from lively winger Joe O’Brien fell for unmarked Shernick Grove to bundle in at the back post.

They didn’t let up there and after Kevin Cringle drew a foul, the resulting free kick was perfectly crossed by Callum Lucy for Stephen Nauby to powerfully head home. A brilliant save from Columba’s goalkeeper Sean Doyle denied Jordan Laite making it 4 – 0 before half time.

The second half kicked off with great tempo and the St Columba’s boys showed renewed motivation. Michael Adofo fired over the bar from outside the box in the first few minutes to signal their intent as a team who were down, but not out.

Lively William Oledorie got into the box and was brought down by the goalkeeper for a penalty. Michael Fenn stepped up to take it and successfully converted to make it 3-1.  Full back Donald Cole brought St Columba’s even closer to levelling the scores by arriving in the box with perfect timing to put the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

However, St Columba’s dreams of a comeback were dashed by Cardinal Heenan Captain Lewis Riley who caught the perfect flick-on from a Cringle free kick to divert the ball past the goalkeeper and secure the win.
